Review of MMI Club Activities for 1997-1998:

The Medical Microbiology and Immunology Club has been in existence for the last four years. The first year there were about 15 members and currently we have approximately 50 members in the club. This year we had several activities for club members. We had meetings to discuss 699 (directed study) opportunities, and discussions about registering for various classes. We also informed club members of any job openings throughout the year. The club also had several social gatherings at State Street Brats to eat dinner and hang out.

We had several guest speakers as well. Greg Iaccarino came to speak about writing resumes and interview techniques. A first year medical student, Jeri Wiedmeyer came to speak to us about her unique life experiences. She returned to medical school later in life after a variety of jobs in microbiology, research and health care. We had Dr. Schell speak about the graduate school program. Janet Waisman spoke about the medical school application and admissions process. Murat Kalayoglu spoke about his experience as a med micro undergraduate and about being a M.D., Ph.D. student. He currently is completing his Ph.D. in Dr. Byrne's lab. Furthermore, we had a staff member come from the Greater Urban League of Madison to speak about volunteer opportunities in tutoring elementary students. The club had a team that participated in the Walk for Diabetes. Dr. Lafamina from Merck came to talk with the club about experiences and opportunities in biotechnology companies.

The Club toured the UW Hospital diagnostic lab, Promega (a biotechnology company), and the Primate center.

Our T-shirt/sweatshirt sale was very successful this year, grossing about $1000. This money helps to pay for the pizza and soda that we have at every meeting and to keep the club running. We also donated $125 to Camp Heartland (a summer camp for children with HIV), $100 to the salvation army, and $100 to the AIDS ride. We held a student/faculty 'End of the Year' party on Friday, May 8th at 5pm in room 408 SMI.
