Summary of our 1999 - 2000 Academic Year Activities

MMI Clothing Sale
Thank you to everyone for helping make this fundraising event a success. Both the traditional Bucky Logo and the Top Ten T-Shirts were a big hit. If you still have not picked up your clothing, please contact Jessica or Christina.

Speakers
I would like to thank Dr. Andy Urban for coming in and talking about being an Infectious Disease Doctor. He was also more than willing to field any question about being a medical student and/or resident and the facts and fictions of this life. If anyone has further questions about infectious disease medicine, please contact either Rachael or Jessica for his email address.

I would also like to thank Janet Waisman for fielding questions on Medical School Admissions. In the heat of the UW's own admission process it was wonderful for her to take time to talk to us.

Hospital Tour
In November MMI Club members had the opportunity to tour the UW Hospital Microbiology lab and learn about the diagnostic strategies and equipment of this facility. Anyone graduating soon and considering a job within this field should be aware of there is an ASM Registry examination that is only offered once a year each spring. For more information can be found at http://www.asmusa.org/acasrc/aca23.htm #Registered Microbiologist, RM.

Helping Out Others
Several members of the MMI club were involved in the SHINE benefit concert to raise money for Camp Heartland. If you are interested in further volunteer work at Camp Heartland there is information in the volunteer binder the presidents have put together. This binder is outside Joan Weber's office...or you can email Jessica or Christina to help you track it down.

MMI Club members also helped out in the distribution of a petition that would increase the percent of government funding which is devoted to direct research for a cure for Diabetes.

Special thanks goes out to Jason Paltzer who helped organize participation in these events...he graduated this winter but is still around the University if you want to contact him. Thanks Jason and good luck.

Anyone need a tutor for an MMI or general science course? GUTS offers tutoring or we can perhaps hook you up with someone in the club who has a particular knack for that subject.

Club Socials
MMI Club members got together several times this semester at both the Rathskellar and State Street Brats to socialize and drive out those mid-semester blues. Although some better attended than others, we always manage to have a pretty good time. Come out and meet the people you see in class every day...I know your not all studying THAT much :)

Congratulations to the many MMI students who graduated this winter...good luck on all your future endeavors !! :)

Coming Up in the Spring?!
Anyone interested in hearing a particular professor talk about his/her research...want to hear about what grad school is like from the people in it....or hear about how to get the coveted job after you graduate? We welcome any suggestions on speakers you'd like to hear, please email Jessica or Christina.

We'd also welcome any suggestions of field trips you'd be interested in. The presidents are great planners but we want you to come along and see what sparks your interest.

Internships/Jobs/Volunteering
Both the current presidents and those of recent past have put in a lot of time and work so that you don't have to. Summer volunteering and internship opportunities are a great way to boost your resume for graduate or medical school. The internships are highly competitive and the applications start being due already in January! Abbott Labs is still looking for people for this summer. Binders are located outside Joan Weber's office, or contact Jessica or Christina to help track them down.

We also continually post job announcements for both the graduating senior and for those looking for some student hourly work. If you have any questions about these, please direct them to Jessica or Christina.

New members always welcome, email the presidents to get on our email list and come join us for free pizza and events like those listed above.
