Graduation Requirements For MMI Undergraduates
Who Declared Their Major After September 1, 2003

(Click here if you declared prior to Fall 2003)

The undergraduate major in Medical Microbiology and Immunology (MMI) provides a basic theoretical and technical study of the structure, molecular biology, pathogenesis, epidemiology, and laboratory identification of the various microorganisms that cause human disease, as well as the host immune response to them.

MMI graduates have a variety of career options from which to choose. University and government laboratories, research institutes, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, and diagnostic laboratories are among the list of employers looking for qualified microbiologists. MMI graduates are employed in settings such as university research laboratories studying the molecular biology of infectious disease and product development labs in major pharmaceutical companies.

  • Students may choose to complete requirements for either B.A. or B.S. degree. Consult the Undergraduate Catalog: http://www.wisc.edu/pubs/ug/10lettsci/index.html
  • Prospective majors should meet with an MMI adviser during their freshman year to outline a course of study appropriate to their academic needs and professional goals. Consult the MMI Website: http://www.medmicro.wisc.edu/undergraduate/advising/index.html
  • Many MMI undergraduates combine the regular course of study with additional electives, such as physics and calculus to prepare for graduate and professional school.
  • Another useful website is the Biological Sciences Course Guide: http://my.wisc.edu/ (under "Academic" tab)

Application Procedure

Students wishing to major in Medical Microbiology and Immunology (MMI) are required to apply for admission. Admission to the MMI major requires an overall minimum grade-point average of 2.50 in the following courses:

  • General Chemistry (Chem 103-104 or Chem 109 or Chem 115-116)
  • First semester Organic Chemistry (Chem 343) or Analytical Chem (Chem 327 or Chem 329)
  • First semester Introductory Biology (Botany/Zoology 151 or Biocore 301)

Transfer students must meet the same requirements in equivalent courses. L&S transfer office recommendations will be used for purposes of determining equivalent courses.

The application form can be found online at: http://www.medmicro.wisc.edu/undergraduate/admissions/index.html
